Deep Blue Sea: Chomp Chomp, Bitch!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are barely escaping with our lives out in the open ocean. We watched the 1999 film from Renny Harlin, Deep Blue Sea.
We’ve had it with these motherfucking sharks on this motherfucking remote underwater research facility! We don’t want to say that dealing with them isn’t worth possibly curing Alzheimer’s disease, but these fish are the worst.
Not only do we get to see them chomp people into pieces, but they’re actually intelligent, too. It’s like trying to fight an aquatic Terminator! But as we all find out, LL Cool J will always be there for us.

Intro
SPEAKER_01Hello and get your rash guards ready because nothing's gonna keep you safe in these waters, but you at least might as well stay warm. Because if you have to be eaten, be comfortable.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's good advice. Yeah. If we're gonna get chopped, if that's my fate, then at least I don't want to be, you know, uncomfortable and scratchy.
SPEAKER_01No, you don't want to be uncomfortable and scratchy. You just want to be as comfortable as you can be as you become a delicacy for these modified sharks. So to find out why we have dropped on the food chain, apparently voluntarily, join us as we talk about the movie Deep Blue Sea on this week's episode of More Movies Pleasure
Movie Discussion
SPEAKER_01and Oh, was there a Wilhelm? There was not a Wilhelm. So that is your spoiler warning right there that there was not a Wilhelm in this not B movie, but definitely walk the line.
SPEAKER_00You know, if you or I wanted to stick it into the B movie slot for this month, I think it would fit in there very, very well. But we may have one uh a movie that is uh significantly lower in quality coming up for you. You know what? Let me From what I hear. I haven't seen it yet, but I've not heard the best things about our upcoming B movie.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. I think the upcoming B movie we're gonna enjoy watching, but I feel like it's gonna land in the B movie category, not because it was trying to, which is the worst kind of B movie. Yeah, like the ones where it's like hard ticket to white. They knew what they were making.
SPEAKER_00Obviously, yes. I mean, I hope they knew it. How could you not? I mean, I I I say that though, and then you you hear about the stories of of like filming the room or birdemic, where they're just like, we're making the next like Spielberg movie, and then that's what you end up with. Yeah, just yeah, but I don't know. Hard ticket to Hawaii was just so falls to the wall, insane, top to bottom.
SPEAKER_01It it was just balls aplenty.
SPEAKER_00It it was balls and boobs. Uh a lot less of that here, despite you know, uh everybody swimming random water. Um, but there was craziness like top to bottom in this movie. I was not expecting Deep Blue C this being my first time ever seeing this movie to be as crazy as it was. I expected it be to be kind of nuts from what I've heard about it just over the years, but there are some banana things happening in this movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's I'm glad I got to experience your first viewing of this because I saw this back in '99 for sure. Like it wasn't on the big screen, but I definitely rented it from Blockbuster, and I was just like, hells yeah, that shark just ate that shit.
SPEAKER_00Oh man. Samuel L. Jackson, oh damn. No, got chum.
SPEAKER_01At least they didn't kill the black guy first for once.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, not first. And they left a black guy to the end.
SPEAKER_01They made it seem like none of them were gonna survive, but then he was saved by his cross.
SPEAKER_00I know. Yeah, thank you. Thank you, Jeebus. You you're helping us uh, you know, all always. In fact, the they killed the white woman in this movie, which is you know, a little surprising.
SPEAKER_01It it was, especially like they definitely went for it where they're like, hey, we're going to kill people you don't expect us to kill that you think are crucial to the story, and they are, but once they've served their purpose, dinner time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. Uh that's gonna come up in our our movie trivia, actually. So that's that's a good thing to keep in mind. It's like nobody is safe in the deep blue sea, especially when you've got mutant sharks on the parade.
SPEAKER_01I remembered that, that's why I was just like uh dancing around how I was wording it. But I was just like, mm-hmm, just like ooh boy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I I knew about the Sam Jackson one. That was about the only one I knew about. I did not expect everybody but two people to just, you know, be turned into a shark poop.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and the people who deserved more gruesome deaths didn't really get it. And not that anybody really needed major deaths in this one, like the doctor who accelerated her experiments. Okay, you know what? Doing the legal testing.
SPEAKER_00I know, that's pretty that one sucked for that guy.
SPEAKER_01W wh which one? The one who was smoking or uh yeah, that's what I was thinking of. I'm thinking about the girl because she's the one who was in charge, like accelerating the experiment. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, although you know, she also I I'd hate to go that way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like I don't blame her for accelerating, but I th I blame her for not telling her team, like, I'm doing this, and so we need to take extra precautions, it shouldn't be an issue, but like that way they're all on the same page, because then they could have at least been more prepared.
SPEAKER_00I would uh I would have expected more from a scientist, you know. I I when I picture a scientist, especially a very competent scientist, I would think that you know they're they're very results-oriented and and they want to prove their hypotheses, but also like are you gonna be are you are you gonna be be a mad scientist about her? Are you gonna disregard everybody's safety just to get your results? I you know, that's the sort of stuff you see in a movie. And well, here we are, I guess.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then she became um a wishbone, essentially.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that was surprising. I was expected her to be, you know, kind of kind of like any of the other characters who almost just get like swallowed whole, but she was chomped to bits. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01You see, that's what things like she's the one that not for vindictive purposes or being super greedy for a noble cause got people killed because she was being disrespectful by not sharing. But I was expecting her death to be more gruesome, and then when I say that, I mean like a shark bit her in half and then went back to bite swallow the other half. But I would expect it to be like it bite her lower half, and she's like trying to swim away, and then it comes back to finish her off and eats the rest of her versus like get up, yeah, a little bit more like the opening of Jaws where it's just like playing, toying with her. Yeah, but like the nice uh uh I'm guessing lab assistant who was like bitten in the crotch and lifted and like shucking around and essentially was like being killed like a how an alligator would kill you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. She no, I I I think uh Dr. Susan McAllister, I think if I got bitten in half the way she did, uh like just the shock of it all would probably I'd be just like lights out immediately. But I think her lab assistant, I mean, obviously we saw her, she was conscious and screaming the entire time. That like it like it sucked.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was almost as bad as I think it's Final Destination 4 or 5, the one where the guy goes after his lucky coin in the pool.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, yeah, that sucked. Man, scare keeping me out of pools for for for good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yep, yep, yep. They're just crazy.
SPEAKER_00Or at least, you know, I'm always keeping an eye on that like uh the that uh filter intake.
SPEAKER_01Just like I'm keeping my distance. I see you, filter. Not today, filter, not today.
SPEAKER_00Not today, Satan. Uh in this case, you know, I'm staying out of out of the water. Um if I'm going to the ocean, I'll I'll enjoy the beach. Maybe I'll wade in where the surface just hidden the sand. But you know, I I've always heard that most shark attacks happen within like uh, you know, not not way out into the deep sea. It's like kind of close to the shore.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I guess it's like the most activity because like we're splashing around like fools.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's probably where where seals and other food are just kind of like coming out to sun themselves, and you know, it's where they're the the least mobile and and easiest to catch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, that that'll make sense because I Nicole was watching some nature documentary and they were showing like the seals that were baiting, like chasing fish that they couldn't catch, but they were make forcing them into like a dead end. That way, once they got there, then they could catch them.
SPEAKER_00Oh dang, they're learning, they're getting intelligent. See, after watching this movie, I'm like, oh, we all have to watch out for for super intelligent sharks because they're gonna be coming for us and eating all of us. But I had no idea it's actually the seals that we need to watch out for.
SPEAKER_01Well, luckily we can scare them off.
SPEAKER_00I guess so, yeah. So Mike Uh until they get organized, until they like unionize and they're just like, you know what, we're taking down these humans once and for all. This is our land now.
SPEAKER_01They've been messing us up for years.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So I guess that's not the life I want to live.
SPEAKER_01I have a couple questions for you. That for this film, the concept. Did you find it hard to swallow, pun intended?
SPEAKER_00That gets a ding. Um, you know, not really, because I went into deep blue seed just being like, alright, I I'm gonna suspend my disbelief real hard and just like I'm going along for the ride. So also it helps that I have no, I'm I'm not a scientist. I have no idea of like the mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease or or what the the the studies about it have been done, what the the research and the the tests on how to cure it have like what what all has been done about it. So I'm I'm just sitting back being like, yeah, why not shark brain fluid? You know, that that of course, well, you know, you you go through every avenue, you try everything you can to try to eliminate uh just a horrible disease because nobody should have to suffer through Alzheimer's or dementia like that.
SPEAKER_01I I agree. So and I feel like this film, I appreciated the fact that it gave us an absurd scenario, but every step of the way they try to justify their actions and the the situation they were building. So I'm like, hey, you know what? I appreciate that. Hey, um, we're messing around with sharks because supposedly they have this this brain fluid. Cool. Hey, we needed more of it, so we made them smarter. That's why they're attacking us like they are. Okay. Not likely, but believable for the movie the world you're trying to show us. Cool. Like you you gave us enough reason to enjoy this human hunt where the sharks are fishing for us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know what? I uh that for me might be the reason why it stays out of B-movie territory, is because the filmmakers were at least making an effort to try to make it sound plausible, you know, or at least something, but hey, it makes sense in the realm that we're experiencing. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And you know, then you throw in uh an LL Cool J and his his bird, and you know, you got the makings of a pretty solid like A-minus movie right there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I love the bird. They're just like talking shit all the time, and unfortunately the bird does die after it says eat me. Sadly. I'm like, really, guys?
SPEAKER_00I loved really well, you know, you gotta throw the puns in somewhere. Yeah, you you can you can skirt around being a B movie, but if you're gonna make a Killer Shark movie, like you gotta know what you are. But I what I loved about the bird is that LL Cool J's relationship with it was almost it came across to me like uh, you know, Cool Jay did not at any point teach the bird to say any of this shit. The bird just like learned it on its own somehow and was just like arguing with Cool Jay the entire time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, pretty much.
SPEAKER_00I I agree. Their their relationship, Cool Jay and and the bird's relationship was probably the the most um you know effective and meaningful one of the movie for me, which is why the bird death hit me so hard. Because like all these other stupid scientists or or like macho men shark hunters, like you know, who who cares? None of them really like each other all that much, they're just working together. But this bird, this bird, and uh this uh whatever his actual character's name is, Preacher Dudley, like that's they did it for me.
SPEAKER_01And I I I enjoy this character because of course they had like the typical there's somebody who's into faith and all that, but he reached out, but he also fought. It wasn't like save me, it was like help me fight this, and then fought. So that was like that that was a perfect way uh representation. And then like his his prayer before the Baptist one with the sharks, so much fucking cursing in it. I'm like, you know what? That's more realistic of if somebody's gonna be asking for help. That's how they're gonna be asking, because like if they're fearing that they're gonna be eaten, they're not gonna be prim and proper. It's kind of like you see a big red coming at you, you're gonna shit your pants. That's why it's called the oh shit moment.
SPEAKER_00I think God would understand. God would be like, oh damn, look at what's happening to you. I mean, I'm not gonna do anything about it, I'm just gonna sit back with some popcorn. But you know, uh curse all you want. Frankly, I'm I'm cursing up a storm up here, you know. That's what all this thunder is about. It's not me rolling, you know, playing bowling, it's me going like, ah shit, ah fuck.
SPEAKER_01Like, you guys did this to yourself. Like, I hey I don't care about the cursing won't keep you out, but if you get here, I'll I'll give you a nice place just because you tried to fight hard.
SPEAKER_00You were trying to play God yourself, so you know you get out of this yourselves, you motherfuckers.
SPEAKER_01I'm getting too old for this shit.
SPEAKER_00Uh Cool J definitely seemed like he was about to say that line.
SPEAKER_01They'll love he's like, I'm going back to the ghetto at the end of the movie.
SPEAKER_00I mean, who can blame him? Yeah, no, I'd be like, yeah, screw the ocean. I've never going to the beach again after this.
SPEAKER_01I'm sure that our shark Wrangler would be like, fuck it, I'm going back to prison.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, right? Gosh. This guy, who is this guy? Carter Blake?
SPEAKER_01Carter Blake, also known as our first movie Punisher.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That was a good one. I didn't mind that one.
SPEAKER_01The it had some cheesy energy to it, but considering they were kind of keeping it what wasn't it, PG 13, if I remember correctly.
SPEAKER_00I think so, yeah. Yeah. I don't think they really started going hard on the Punisher stories until uh the Netflix John Bernthal one.
SPEAKER_01Which, damn.
SPEAKER_00Sadly. Yeah. Although he's coming, he's coming back into the new uh Spider-Man movie. I'm good. I'm interested in seeing like how far they go with the Spider-Man movie with Punisher.
SPEAKER_01I feel like they're not gonna give him a lot of scenes to be violent, but when he is, they will show it. It's not to the same scale because it's Spider-Man, but they will go bloodier. Like I'm I'm guessing they'll probably go like the Venom route. Because those movies, like people getting decapitated, but there wasn't like limbs splattering everywhere, it was just like quick.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So gruesome without overdoing the gore.
SPEAKER_00That's fine, that's fine for a Spider-Man movie. But no, in the meantime, we get uh yeah, we get this this Punisher. I like him. I like Thomas Chain. He's always done a good job.
SPEAKER_01Didn't he do Thank You for Smoking?
SPEAKER_00Oh, that was Aaron Eckhart. They do look just like exactly the same, but yeah. Got it, got it. That's a good movie too. We should have that one. I like that one. But no, this this guy's got a got a good resume.
SPEAKER_01Kind of looks like he could have been Highlander at one point with the expressions he's making.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, exactly. I do I I I feel like he should be more uh like beloved and recognized as like one of those like legendary action stars. He certainly was trying to go for that that kind of status with you know Deep Lucy or the Punisher or whatever, but just never quite got there, which is a shame, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he could have been the first Jason Statham.
SPEAKER_00He could have been the American Jason Statham, yeah. Yeah. Now, I mean, you know, which isn't to say that he's struggling or anything. He's doing all right. In fact, he's he's gonna be on on a Star Trek soon, and yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let's see what we got for him.
SPEAKER_00Let's see. Uh uh, he was in Boogie Nights. Let's see. Oh, a few uh Paul Thomas Anderson movies. Planisher.
SPEAKER_01Nothing major.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Scott Pilgrim vs. the world. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Vegan Police. Yeah, nothing major, but definitely stuff that keeps him busy. That's good. That's good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's he's done, it looks like at least one movie every year. He's working. He he's he's nobody worry about Thomas Jane. He's doing okay.
SPEAKER_01So we discussed the movie, like the world they tried to force down our throat, which they essentially gave it was like jello, just went down smooth.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, yeah, no complaints here.
SPEAKER_01My question to you is the doctor's goal and the method she took, forgetting that she should have informed her staff about the shark's possible intelligence increasing. Do you think she should have messed with nature like that, assuming she took the proper precautions with her team?
SPEAKER_00Ah, that's a tough one. I'm really like struggling here between being like, you know what, fuck Alzheimer's, and then also being like, but fuck animal testing too. You know, that's that's uh uh thing I'm I'm pretty strongly against. Um even though I can understand the argument that it's it's necessary for it can be necessary for medical advancements, you know, especially uh just like something as major as as working on dementia. Uh I think if if we're stipulating that she wasn't just like so results driven and and was I don't know, it always it seemed like with her she had this like ticking clock in in the back of her head the entire time. I guess when you're working with like money people, there's always that sort of uh push from them. It's like results, we need it now, we need it faster. We need you yesterday even. Yeah. But I don't think that's any reason to endanger other people's lives, especially people who are working for you. That's so irresponsible.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I I think like the main thing is like in this scenario, if she had told them this could be a side effect and they took extra precautions to keep an eye out for it to be extra safe with these sharks coming at them, are you okay with the testing she was doing if she had done proper, not proper, but taking steps to try to compensate for the risks?
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, I think I I could lean more toward like, yeah, if she if she was smarter about this, which is ironic considering how intelligent she she is, uh, you know, I think there's a very strong argument you can make, and that I would agree with that, you know, and it's gotta be done. Like if you if you had the opportunity to cure Alzheimer's, then I mean why wouldn't you do it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Like I would say the only thing is make sure you're not subjecting these animals to more than you have to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that was that was, I think, what I was gonna say next. Is like, do do everything you need to do to get to the point where it's like, hey, we got it cured. And then you know what? Maybe we don't need to keep testing on these animals. We we've got it, you know? And in the meantime, while you're testing on these animals, take like every precaution to keep everybody safe, but also take every precaution to not torture them, too, you know. Yeah, I think they were doing that. They were they were like knocking out the sharks, they were putting them to, you know, putting them under and when they were they were sucking out their brain fluid, their brain proteins, or whatever. It's not like they they had the sharks lashed down and they were like sawing open their skulls with a chainsaw while they was still, you know, awake and uh aware. But yeah, like do what you need to do, but don't be sadistic about it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because like once uh the funny thing is like they were showing, like they even said these sharks are only eating other sharks, like they weren't even eating fish. I'm like, that should have been a big red flag that you've been altering some altering something pretty bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. I say I say all that now. I it it makes me part of me, it just makes me feel really un uneasy about saying all of that. But I mean, I don't know, like if you've got the opportunity to cure Alzheimer's or cancer or or you know AIDS or any of the the the big bad stuff in the world, you should probably take it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the I think when it comes to animal testing, ideally we would want to not have to do it. But if you're going to do it, be humane about how you're treating the animals and make sure that it's for something that's actually worth it. Oh, lipstick testing, figure out another way. Yeah, curing a disease. Okay, that could make sense. Like make sure that the abuse has a bigger goal, it's worth this sacrifice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Or maybe, you know, in yeah, if we're talking like cosmetics and and the not so like essential stuff in the world, like maybe don't put chemicals that you have to test against living things into it.
SPEAKER_01Heck, in Jurassic Park, they had those supercomputers that could like gene sequence, like have computers run scenarios and then find willing human volunteers.
SPEAKER_00I mean, you know what, yeah, offer offer good payment and make sure they understand the risks. I think you're kind of covered then.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because they have like for like cat cancer pace, they have for cancer patients like these experimental treatments when there's no other option, like you're gone in three months, you want to try this anyway, just this like a last pale Mary.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'd be like, heck yeah, let's go for it. Will it make those last few months absolute, like my my entire body's on fire, agony? Uh maybe not. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but it's just like it's just like there's no other it's not like I'm gonna get any extra time, like might as well try.
SPEAKER_00Might as well try. And hey, if it works, or even if it doesn't, it could probably help other people down the line too.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Like it's not going to which make anything worse for you. Like it's already bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I say, why not? Go for it. But uh yeah, I don't know. When when you're at the point where you're uh uh creating or breeding or whatever sharks that have this like uh like evilness to them where they're they're like crazed and trying to attack things they would never normally attack then I think you've crossed the line. I'm just like no you gotta shut it down. Find a different way because this is unnatural.
SPEAKER_01Well they were being vindictive because like the first person who got maimed when they got him in the water which hey that wasn't their fault like the what was it the wench I think you said it was like failed on the helicopter. Oh yeah yeah so when that guy was in the water when they crashed the helicopter which was amazing that they pulled it down and crashed that was crazy and then they took the guy and didn't eat him and threw him to break the glass like what a way of torturing him and the people you're trying to scare like literally all the shark had to do was like I'm shark man. Yeah exactly no this this shark was he knew what he was doing and he was playing with his and apparently they baited the humans to go into certain areas to help sink the place just enough for them to get free. That's crazy. That one I didn't believe like how would they know the structure like I get they're smart and like in Jurassic Park the Velociraptors opened the door I'm like I can see that being something for an intelligent animal but I'm like how would they know what to flood to sink unless they're just like if they were just like banging against different parts to sink it that would make sense I'm like that was a little far fetched their movie that they actually knew the weak spots I don't know you know these are these are mutant sharks. Maybe they've got like x-ray vision too it didn't explore it who knows maybe they were the original street sharks. Exactly yeah no if if if they weren't able to blow up all these sharks in this movie who knows where it would have led to a franchise yeah well I think they they did do sequels I don't think it had any of the uh people no but yeah I I have to I have to there are a few more deep blue C two I have to two and three no three what the hell oh there's a third one let's see third one came out in 2020 okay so I alright I have this muted so I'm just looking at the trailer right now for you guys for the audience and you to save you guys the hassle at Deep Lucy 2 2018 that's already a big gap so we went sharks okay not a big deal multiple sharks hunting okay yep they're literally an underground facility is in the trailer kind of like um megalodon facility and they're training the sharks now why she was asking for it yep why would you stick your arm in the mouth like even if you had it sedated what if it twitched yeah right I would like have like a metal arm di if you had to go get something out of its mouth like not sticking my limb in there.
SPEAKER_00Alright well we could go in these tangents for a very long time yeah we could I want to do like one one more little tangent about the these movies uh in regards to their uh deep loose or in regards to their uh Rotten Tomatoes ratings well yeah I was gonna ask you like if there was anything else you wanted to cover before we went to any fun facts so yeah what is this tangent I'm very curious. Well I I think it I think the Rotten Tomatoes ratings are fascinating here. Okay so for Deep Lucy it's got a 60% uh tomato meter rating surprisingly uh a 40% popcorn meter so the critics like this one more than the general audience I think the critics probably just appreciated that they actually put effort into the movie that they were trying to make us believe like what pretty much what we were saying like hey I can appreciate that you guys actually put effort into this story. Yes. Now Deep Blue C2 it's got significantly fewer critics uh reviews it's only got five reviews but still it's got a zero percent uh the domino meter and a 14 on the popcorn meter yeah because it just looks like a bad knockoff yeah now the most like shocking gobsmacking thing I may see all day is for deep blue sea it's got 14 reviews so still not a lot but you know it's it's enough um you know I want to say the popcorn meter rating first it's got a 61% popcorn meter rating I'm curious if uh just as a little game here what do you think the tomato meter rating for deep blue sea three is all right imagine it being like 10%.
SPEAKER_01All right so the first one was 60% the second one was 0% third one granted fewer reviews as than the first one but still 79% what okay I need to know what this one's about now C three all right the uh poster looks bad the main actress is definitely one from B movies she was from Lost actually her too yeah all right one last trailer I have no idea what this is about since I'm not playing it with sound okay I I gotta have some sound like what what what's the point of this yeah B movie graphics catchphrases and I don't know why I got s maybe the only reason I can imagine got a high tomato rating because it went straight to DVD I guess was maybe the line of when you mess with nature nature bites back.
SPEAKER_00That's a pretty good line okay I'll give you guys that one like come on like yeah what like yeah you that's good that that's good like I I give you that that was a good one man something else well uh is there any parting thoughts parting thoughts before we get to what look like interesting trivia
Trivia
SPEAKER_00yeah some interesting trivia I can't really think of anything else so let's get to the to the fun stuff here the the fun trivia stuff all right first stop here originally Saffron Burrows who uh was the the uh Susan McAllister the doctor was to be the hero of the film but director Rennie Harlan said in an interview that test audiences hated that ending which really surprised him the test audience felt she should die since everything was her fault. Oh these test audiences are harsh I mean they're maybe not wrong but oh jeez. Yeah so they made some quick edits and reshot some footage to make her get eaten by a shark. He then cut out some earlier scenes at Burrows to make her less sympathetic. It was also his idea to make L O Cool J the hero citing that everyone liked him and that he was a pr that he was a quote pretty cool guy. Well that's why he's audiences love the resign I mean ladies love Cool Jay he because he's so cool. He is a pretty cool guy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah so I think that was the right that was the right call you know let's see the license plate pulled from the shark's teeth is the same one found in the Tiger Shark and Jaws. So doing a nice little homage to some of their inspiration.
SPEAKER_00Yeah I like that I like that yeah if we hadn't already done jaws in 2022 apparently uh I would have suggested we we do that one next but we could always do uh at least Jaws two or three as a B movie. Oh no oh I've heard those are particularly bad.
SPEAKER_01I didn't even finish two when I tried.
SPEAKER_00Oof that's that you know that's bad then folks. Alright well the Gen 2 Mako shark is described as 45 feet long and 8,000 pounds. That would make it more than three times the length and four times heavier than the largest Mako shark ever recorded and twice the size of the largest known Great White shark. Wow so yeah crazy mutations crazy this is this is verging on like we were talking about Jason Statham earlier this is verging on Meg, you know the Meg territory.
SPEAKER_01Rennie Harlan admitted that the idea of abruptly killing off Russell Franklin Samuel Jackson at two thirds of the movie was borrowed from the similar fate of Tom Shriek and Alien. Both men were the natural leaders of their respective groups leaving the remaining survivors in utter despair and both were the best known actor in the cast yeah that does give you a shell shock thereby making their premature demise extra shocking and unexpected which I literally like back in 99 I still hadn't had a much of a potty mouth but I literally was like what the fuck and then after watching the scene with an audience for the first time hearing them scream in horror and fear of Harlan said that it that scene paid off for the entire movie. Yep.
SPEAKER_00Yeah absolutely got a little like psycho energy in there too with uh you know killing her off in the beginning uh was it Janet Lee I I think maybe I don't remember Vivian Lee let's see I I gotta I gotta figure this out otherwise uh Johanna's gonna be very upset with me. Mm-hmm. Janet Lee yes got it the first time yeah you know she she she's they're such a big star and then boom oh sorry nope they're dead we don't care about them yep yep yep well it was still surprising to see uh Samuel L. Jackson go the way he did because it was almost a little funny. He was like in the middle of giving one of those like rousing like work on our survive speeches like uh uh what Bill Pullman in Independence Day or or Mel Gibson in Braveheart and then just suddenly like mid-sentist just chomp chomp shark comes out of nowhere. Yep it's just like see you later bitch
Recommendations
SPEAKER_00oh and now it's time for us to say well ratings bitch that was a excellent segue that deserves a all right let's see ratings well what did you give it on letterbox or just in general I gave it a a good solid three stars on letterbox which was surprising for me actually I was expecting to rate this one much lower I I thought this was going to be sort of like a misplaced B movie but no I I I think this one was a solid one and one that everybody should see because at least once give it a rental because it is good fun.
SPEAKER_01It is good fun that I was surprised to see that rating for you and very happy to see that rating from you because I was like hey he enjoyed it which I gave it three stars as well because it just sits right there like it's worth a watch if you're that kind of person you will buy it like I did have in the past in the past but it's not something that you need to own.
SPEAKER_00Well I guess it's just your your sick love for these B movie style movies is just it's rubbing up on me. You know I'm becoming Steven. Oh no pretty soon I'm just gonna be looking for like I'm gonna be watching uh Sharknado 2 on my own just for the hell of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah yeah oh god I hope not please please anything but that I'll watch it with you if you if you I will not recommend going through the Sharknado franchise from beginning to end. I did it and I regret it but if you do want to see the second one because the second one is fun to see how shitty it went before it goes to flaming pile of dumpster garbage we could watch it.
SPEAKER_00Alright but you know if we're scrambling for a B movie sometime or just I've really got nothing else to do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah I would not go past two.
SPEAKER_00Okay that's that's a good warning for me. And for all of you listeners don't go past
Outro
SPEAKER_00two. Alright well I think it's it's time for us to say bye bye bitch. And ah that's exactly what I'm gonna do. Thank you Steven for putting this one to the episode index it was a a delightful surprise and uh it was great to watch it with you. So that's another thing. Watch this with friends everybody this is this goes down smooth when you're watching when you have like a little watch party going on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah it it it was a good watch party.
SPEAKER_00Yeah absolutely and until next time when we've got uh at this point you know kind of a mystery movie coming up we don't even know uh until then I've been uh uh uh chompy Sean and I've been shark bait Steve Shark bait shark bait oh no how to go shark bait and you've been listening to more flippers
